Abstract

Sragen batik is a cultural product with great potential to support the regional creative industry. However, the development of the batik industry in Sragen Regency has not been accompanied by the formation of a strong visual identity, so most of the motifs developed still adopt batik standards from other regions or follow generic market trends, contributing to a crisis of cultural identity and low product differentiation. This study revitalizes Sragen Batik motif designs based on local wisdom as a strategy to strengthen visual identity while preserving regional culture, using the Research and Development (R&D) method adapted from the Borg and Gall model across twelve stages, from identifying local cultural potential and collecting data through literature studies, observations, and interviews, to developing motif designs, expert validation, design revision, and prototype production. The revitalization transforms elements of Sragen's local culture, particularly the iconography of the Sangiran Archaeological Site, the Bengawan Solo river, and Sukowati history, into contemporary batik motif compositions without eliminating their philosophical values. The process yielded three fully realized motifs, Sangiran Purba, Bengawan Solo, and Balontang Kasmaran, which were validated by ten expert judges comprising academics, government officials, Dekranasda representatives, and batik artisans. Expert validation across five aspects, originality, cultural suitability, visual composition, aesthetics, and production feasibility, produced an overall feasibility score of 4.07 (81.3%), categorized as Highly Feasible, with cultural suitability scoring highest (88%) and visual composition and production feasibility identified as areas for further technical refinement. In addition to producing validated batik prototypes and securing Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), this research strengthens Sragen Batik's visual identity, increases the competitiveness of the regional batik industry, and serves as a replicable model for the development of sustainable cultural products based on local wisdom.
