Abstract

This community service program aimed to broaden students’ and teachers’ knowledge and develop their technical skills in applying Internet of Things (IoT) technology through training in the design of an automated plant irrigation system at SMPN 2 Taman, Sidoarjo, Indonesia. The program was motivated by participants’ limited knowledge and practical skills in designing and implementing systems involving microcontrollers and electronic sensors. The program was implemented through a structured workflow comprising partner needs assessment, system prototype design and development, training implementation, outcome evaluation, and handover of the equipment to the school. The final prototype used a water pump, relay modules, soil moisture sensors, and an ESP32 module as the primary controller.  The entire system could be monitored and operated wirelessly through an IoT-based MQTT platform. Before the program, participants had no prior experience in designing or operating systems based on microcontrollers and electronic sensors. Following the training, all participants demonstrated an understanding of fundamental IoT principles and were able to operate the assembled system independently and efficiently. These outcomes were supported by a post-training evaluation using a five-point Likert-scale questionnaire assessing participant satisfaction and understanding. The evaluation yielded a mean score of 4.05 out of 5, indicating a Good/Satisfactory rating, while positive responses (Strongly Agree and Agree) exceeded 70% across most training aspects. In addition to its useful advantages for plant upkeep and management, the program functioned as a practical, project-based learning opportunity that directly aided in the development and execution of the Projek Penguatan Profil Pelajar Pancasila (P5) initiative within the educational setting
